Upper Peninsula Zoning Board of Appeals Training
Date: November 7, 2013
Time: 6 - 8:30 p.m.
Location: Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center, E3774 University Dr., Chatham,. MI 49816
Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) members are regularly confronted with difficult decisions regarding the physical development of the community. Faced with ordinance interpretation, appeals of previous decisions, and requests for variances, information on which to base decisions can seem vague, pressures can be great, and the threat of lawsuits can weigh heavily. Fortunately, the job of the ZBA member can be made easier when roles and responsibilities are known, best practices are used, and information is complete.
Experience helps, but training is paramount for a community to manage risk associated with ZBA decisions. The MSU Extension Zoning Board of Appeals training covers many aspects of ZBA administration, including:
- Statutory requirements
- Appeals process
- Process to make a decision
- Rules of procedure
- Conducting meetings
The training is tailored for ZBA members and staff responsible for administering the zoning ordinance.
There are four training locations throughout the UP with varying dates in early November and December.
All programs run 6 - 8:30pm (local time)
Cost: $55 (Master Citizen Planners register for $50) - Includes program materials and refreshments
Master Citizen Planners will earn 3.0 hours of continuing education
Register by Oct. 30th for the November programs and by Nov. 26th for the December programs!
