Janice Swanson was appointed acting chair of the Department of Animal Science, effective May 16. Swanson succeeds Karen Plaut, who resigned her position as of May 15 to accept a position at Purdue University. Before being named acting chair, Swanson was director of animal welfare at MSU, coordinating outreach, teaching and research on farm animal behavior and well-being with an emphasis on social responsibility in the food system. She holds faculty appointments in the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.

Donald I. Dickmann was named acting chair of the Department of Forestry, effective May 6. A former MABR scientist, Dickmann is professor emeritus of forestry, specializing in silviculture and physiological ecology. He also held positions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, West Georgia College and Iowa State University. Dickmann is a certified forester with the Society of American Foresters and a certified senior ecologist with the Ecological Society of America, and he has served as chair of the Michigan Society of American Foresters. He taught a broad spectrum of undergraduate and graduate courses as a member of the forestry faculty and published numerous scholarly articles and books. Dickmann succeeds Dan Keathley, who had served as chair since 1989. Keathley will continue to pursue his research agenda as a faculty member in the Department of Horticulture.
